The double exposure photographs are about reinterpreting the city. Parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens are brought through the filter of photography. I am interested in how forms can become bonded with light and shadow. In some cases Reality is re-built according to the limits of light sensitive materials. In these photographs, light carves objects into strange contours and darkness models forms together into unfamiliar orientations. This conceals the world, creating an image broken open by contradictory gravitational forces. Transforming the regular everyday occurrences into non-objective/original art. In some images, digital overlapping was done, in others double exposed slide photographs were used to create quadruple exposures. This project began in 2003, it has also been applied to my sculptural and painting processes.Jon Axelrod, January 2008.
